How to Write SMART Goals

Specific

Don't say "get healthier" — say "lose 15 pounds" or "run a 5K." The more specific your goal, the clearer your path forward. Vague goals create vague results.

Measurable

If you can't measure it, you can't track it. Use numbers: pounds lost, revenue earned, hours studied. Ask yourself: how will I know when I've actually achieved this?

Achievable

Challenge yourself, but stay realistic. Can you actually do this with your current time, money, and skills? Stretch goals are great — impossible goals just lead to burnout.

Relevant

Does this goal actually matter to you, or are you doing it because you think you "should"? If it doesn't align with your real priorities, you won't stick with it.

Time-bound

"Someday" never comes. Set a real deadline. For bigger goals, break them into monthly milestones so you can catch problems early and stay on track.

FAQ

What does SMART stand for?

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Instead of "get fit," say "run a 5K in under 30 minutes by June."

How often should I review my goals?

Short-term goals (under 3 months): weekly. Long-term goals: weekly check + monthly deep dive. Pick a consistent day — Sunday evenings work best.

Can I change my goals after setting them?

Yes. If it's not working after 4-6 weeks, adjust. But don't change every week — that's just procrastination. Quarterly reviews for major changes.
